  • Park rangers are often the first to respond to emergencies in our city parks. Yet despite rising crime, the City of L.A. continues to leave these peace officers unequipped for the dangers they face while patrolling remote and isolated areas, day and night. Arming rangers is a critical step toward protecting those who serve, safeguarding parkgoers and improving security in surrounding communities. To learn more, read our article at http://ow.ly/j53s50LMBBy and watch “The Dangerous and Unpredictable Job of an L.A. Park Ranger” at https://youtu.be/egANJY0p8Bc?si=btnjVNNLbpX_vUFW.

  • Whether it’s advocating for legislation at the local, state and national levels, speaking out against policies that make it more difficult for officers to do their jobs or endanger the public, or calling for increased city and federal funding to upgrade or replace equipment and support recruitment and retention initiatives, LAAPOA works year-round to ensure our members receive the support and protections they deserve. As Labor Day approaches on September 7, we can’t help but reflect on the work we do on behalf of our members and the importance of the holiday. • In honor of National Dog Day, we’re showing some love and appreciation for our highly skilled four-legged partners in the LAXPD K-9 Unit! Did you know the LAXPD K-9 Unit is considered the largest K-9 team among U.S. airports? The Department’s highly trained K-9 teams play a critical role in keeping travelers and the public safe at one of the world’s busiest airports. Their duties include high-visibility patrols, physical deterrence, unattended-vehicle and article investigations, explosives detection, public service to the aviation community and more. We’re grateful to our loyal K-9s and their handlers for the challenging work they do every day!

  • As conditions in L.A. City parks and recreational areas continue to deteriorate, unarmed park rangers face increasing dangers on the job. For far too long, the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks has resisted calls to provide rangers with the protection they need to safely perform their myriad duties.

Until the Department takes action to address these safety concerns, LAAPOA will continue urging its park ranger members to refrain from performing law enforcement duties. Instead, calls for law enforcement services in City parks should be routed to LAPD, ensuring that rangers are not placed in situations that put their safety at risk.

  • L.A. park rangers are an integral part of our city’s public safety. They perform a multitude of duties to protect people of all ages who use more than 450 parks and recreation facilities across the city, while also protecting park resources for future generations. To perform this complex job, our rangers must be held to the highest standards. In fact, they have the most rigorous education and training requirements of any law enforcement agency in the city.
